Living Contrary to a Contrary Culture

“51 When the days were coming to a close for Him to be taken up, He determined to journey to Jerusalem. 52 He sent messengers ahead of Him, and on the way they entered a village of the Samaritans to make preparations for Him. 53 But they did not welcome Him, because He determined to journey to Jerusalem. 54 When the disciples James and John saw this, they said, “Lord, do You want us to call down fire from heaven to consume them?” 55 But He turned and rebuked them, 56 and they went to another village.”    Luke 9:51-56

Remember the big picture:

  • This WORLD is not our home.
    • “19 If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own. However, because you are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of it, the world hates you.”  John 15:19
    • “14 I have given them Your word. The world hated them because they are not of the world, as I am not of the world. 15 I am not praying that You take them out of the world but that You protect them from the evil one. 16 They are not of the world, as I am not of the world.”   John 17:14-16
    • “36 “My kingdom is not of this world,” said Jesus. “If My kingdom were of this world, My servants would fight, so that I wouldn’t be handed over to the Jews. As it is, My kingdom does not have its origin here.”  John 18:36
    • “20 but our citizenship is in heaven, from which we also eagerly wait for a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ.”      Philippians 3:20
    • “14 For we do not have an enduring city here; instead, we seek the one to come.”   Hebrews 13:14
  • We are called to live CONTRARY to this world
    • ” 1 Therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, I urge you to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God; this is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this age, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may discern what is the good, pleasing, and perfect will of God.”         Romans 12:1-2
    • “11 Dear friends, I urge you as strangers and temporary residents to abstain from fleshly desires that war against you. 12 Conduct yourselves honorably among the Gentiles, so that in a case where they speak against you as those who do what is evil, they will, by observing your good works, glorify God on the day of visitation.”                            1 Peter 2:11-12
    • “15 Do not love the world or the things that belong to the world. If anyone loves the world, love for the Father is not in him. 16 For everything that belongs to the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride in one’s lifestyle—is not from the Father, but is from the world. 17 And the world with its lust is passing away, but the one who does God’s will remains forever.”  1 John 2:15-17

Remember Jesus’ mission:

  • Christ came to SAVE, not destroy
    • “10 For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save the lost.”  Luke 19:10
    • “17 For God did not send His Son into the world that He might condemn the world, but that the world might be saved through Him.”  John 3:17
  • Christ’s example teaches us that grace, mercy, and kindness needs to be CULTIVATED by us in our culture
    • “8 The Lord is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger and rich in faithful love. He will not always accuse us or be angry forever. 10 He has not dealt with us as our sins deserve or repaid us according to our offenses. 11 For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is His faithful love toward those who fear Him. 12 As far as the east is from the west, so far has He removed our transgressions from us. 13 As a father has compassion on his children, so the Lord has compassion on those who fear Him. 14 For He knows what we are made of, remembering that we are dust.” Psalm 103:8-14

    • “11 Tell them: As I live”—the declaration of the Lord God—“I take no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but rather that the wicked person should turn from his way and live. Repent, repent of your evil ways! Why will you die, house of Israel?” Ezekiel 33:11

  • Christ’s example teaches us that JUDGEMENT belongs to Him
    • “5 It is a clear evidence of God’s righteous judgment that you will be counted worthy of God’s kingdom, for which you also are suffering, since it is righteous for God to repay with affliction those who afflict you and to reward with rest you who are afflicted, along with us. This will take place at the revelation of the Lord Jesus from heaven with His powerful angels, taking vengeance with flaming fire on those who don’t know God and on those who don’t obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus. These will pay the penalty of eternal destruction from the Lord’s presence and from His glorious strength 10 in that day when He comes to be glorified by His saints and to be admired by all those who have believed, because our testimony among you was believed.”                                            2 Thessalonians 1:5-10
  • Christ knows the big PICTURE better than we do
    • “5 Philip went down to a city in Samaria and proclaimed the Messiah to them. The crowds paid attention with one mind to what Philip said, as they heard and saw the signs he was performing. For unclean spirits, crying out with a loud voice, came out of many who were possessed, and many who were paralyzed and lame were healed. So there was great joy in that city.”  Acts 8:5-8

How do we live contrary to a contrary culture?

  1. Never forget this world is not our home. Our CITIZENSHIP is in Heaven.
  2. Never forget the mission of Jesus is to SAVE lives, not destroy lives. Therefore we live to model Him in all we do and say.
